What Is Intuitive Eating?

By Director of Product Development & Fit3 Trainer Tina Van Horn

In the March episode of the Reliv Podcast, I interviewed Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Jen McDaniel. Since our conversation, I have listened to the recording several times, and I noticed something that she said that didn’t quite sink in until recently. Jen explained that each of us already knows—intuitively—what we should be eating.

According to Jen, we don’t need someone to tell us what foods are good or bad for us because our bodies innately understand. The problem is that we get confused by all of the misinformation that fills our newsfeeds and we start to second guess our working knowledge of the best fuel for our own bodies.

While we know what we should be eating, the challenge is actually practicing intuitive eating. I know oatmeal is a good choice for breakfast, but I am really craving a donut.  In many ways, we have to retrain our brains to think about our choices and be intentional with our nutrition because we have become detached from listening to our bodies. Instead, we act impulsively, which can lead to decisions that we regret—like caving into that donut craving! Learning to listen to our bodies and eat intuitively is a process. Be patient!

With Fit3, the goal is to provide you with a plan that helps you establish a healthy relationship with food, a product to help you fight cravings, and a support system to guide you toward more intuitive healthy lifestyle patterns. The program is simple, but that doesn't mean it is easy. You are in charge. Own your choices!

What choices will you own today? How do you measure your success?
